A tropical weather disturbance is located 305 miles SSW of the mouth of the Mississippi River earlier this morning and is moving NW at 8 mph with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph.

The NHC has issued a Tropical Storm Warning from Cameron to the Mouth of the Pearl River. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect from west of West of Cameron to High Island, Texas. The NHC forecasts landfall along the western Louisiana coast Wednesday evening as a tropical storm. Tides are expected to be 1-3 feet higher than normal in the Tropical Storm Warning area.

The disturbance is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 4 to 8 inches that may produce flooding in our area.   The maximum amounts of 10 inches over southeastern Louisiana, southern Mississippi and Alabama, and the western Florida Panhandle through Wednesday evening.  

Our staff is on alert and preparing the City for possible effects of the storm.  

The City is asking for your assistance.

  • Avoid walking or driving through flood waters.
  • If flood waters rise around your car but the water in not moving, abandon the car and move to higher ground.  Do not leave the car and enter moving water.
  • Sandbags can be picked up at the Maintenance Department between  7:00 AM and 3:30 pm.  The schedule may change depending on conditions.
  • Call 911 for emergency assistance.
  • Report drainage problems to City Hall 504-737-6383, After hours, call 504-737-9957.

  • If able, check storm drains and clear of debris.  
  • Pick up exterior unsecured items and debris.
